Culvert Filling – Inundatie Kanaal.

No project is too big or too small! Benefil are called upon to decommission an abandoned culvert situated between the river Waal and the Inundatie Kanaal in Tiel.
Filling this culvert was achieved using RG22 foam.

What seems to be the problem?

In Tiel the decision was made to close a 720m³ disused culvert nestled between the Waal and the Inundatie Kanaal.

By filling the void we could stop water from seeping into the canal from the Waal and also prevent further erosion to the structure.

This culvert was an estimated 4-5m in height! Because it was such a substantial size two trucks were required over a 2 day period to complete the job.

The BIGGEST Obstacle

A culvert this size requires large quantities of foam, which made it necessary to send out our biggest trucks.

However because the job site, situated between the two bodies of water, was slippery and uneven this made it significantly more difficult to manoeuvre the trucks along the track.

Regardless of the tricky situation our drivers expertly guided the trucks safely down to the location, and without any hiccups!

New Vans!

Since this job we have added some new vehicles to the Benefil fleet! These vans particularly give us the capability to reach those more unique locations.

You can read all about our company vehicles in this latest article.

Filling the Culvert

Firstly the culvert needed to be pumped dry of water. Besides waiting for the water level of the river to naturally drop, concrete blocks and soil were used to further dam the area.

Following this we drilled holes from the top into the culvert and used straps to mount the pipes along both sides of the interior.

By connecting pipes on both sides to corresponding trucks we filled the void simultaneously, thus making the task much more efficient.

Watch the Drop!

Lastly we filled 2 100m³ drop down shafts using hoses from the top. These shafts functioned as a drop down dam helping to regulate the water level of the canal.

Only once we had completed filling the main culvert could we finally fill and close the shafts.

What products do we use?

For this case study we used RG22 foam. However depending on your needs we provide a range of foams varying in density from medium to strong products.
